BED & BREAKFAST BORNEO
EASTERN DOCKLANDS
NEW DEVELOPMENTS, ARCHITECTURE, HISTORY, SOCIAL LIFE AND LEISURE IN THE EASTERN DOCKLANDS.
In the centre of Amsterdam a neighborhood is developing on several islands
and peninsulas in the Y-lake. The former docklands have been changed into
a new, attractive living area.
The neighborhood has an interesting mix of innovative, internationally
renowned modern architecture and stylish historical buildings related
to the maritime history of the area. Several bridges connect these islands
and peninsulas to the mainland and to one another.
Many of them are designed in an original and attractive style.

WALKING/CYCLING
You can make several attractive walks and cycle tours in the Eastern Docklands: busy and quiet routes with beautiful views of innovative and historical architecture. Interesting shops, sculptural art and restaurants on the way.
ARCHITECTURE
The central area of the Eastern Docklands, right along the
Y-lake, has some of the most striking new apartment buildings and also
most of the historical buildings in the area.
Several of these historical maritime buildings have been renovated; others
are still being restored.
A shopping centre is situated in an old warehouse called Brazilie. In the earlier part of the twentieth century this warehouse was used for cocoa storage from Central or South America.
The historical Lloyd Hotel at the lakeside was a hotel for immigrants
from Central and Eastern Europe to the Americas in the early twentieth
century.
It has been renovated and now it is again a hotel and a cultural centre.
The Lloyd Quarantaine Building is now a restaurant and a centre for young artists. The Lloyd Coffeehouse has turned into a restaurant and local cultural centre.
Some historical ships have been renovated and have become restaurants. They are situated in the central area of the Eastern Docklands.
These are just some examples of the beautiful buildings and architecture that can be found near your B&B BORNEO. Please ask us for any information you need!

SOCIAL LIFE/ NIGHT LIFE
The shipbuilders and trading companies left the Eastern Dockland in the 1970s and redevelopment of the area started in the 1980s. During the seventies the local community was made up of artists, city nomads and houseboat dwellers, living in and around the vacant warehouses. Social life in the Eastern Docklands is still influenced by this history, although the majority of current residents are professionals.
Many local cafes and restaurants have an artistic or creative atmosphere.
Most cafes and restaurants are at or near Levantkade, Azartplein and notably Veemkade, Oostelijke Handelskade and Cruquiusweg. This is the central area of the Eastern Docklands.
On Oostelijke Handelskade you can find club Panama

The Eastern Docklands are well-known for offering a lot of
live music performances and festivals. Many cafes and restaurants have
live music in the weekends.
Club Panama has several podiums and an excellent reputation in music and
performances.
EATING AND DRINKING
Just on the corner from your room you find the delicious Italian Restaurant Oceano where you be welcomed by owner Francesco. Visitors of B & B Borneo always get a special surprise at this restaurant.
Very good cuisine is found in the restaurants Gare
de l’Est (the former railway station) and Voorbij
het Einde (a chic place with a view to the garden), for example.
La Trattoria is a pleasant place serving
good Italian food.
Near your room you will find a lot more great places to eat or drink and enjoy the view of, for example, the Y-banks. Your host and hostess can tell you all good restaurants and how to get there!
